CLASS SCHEDULE

Proposals for Spring class are due to the Education Committee by January 31, 2024.

ART SAMPLERS For many years, GAC has been closed January and February. That may change this year!  There is an interest in offering ‘Art Samplers’ during this period.  These ‘Samplers’ provide art opportunities and pique interest in art experiences or different mediums and techniques.  These ‘Samplers’ can be 2 to 3 hour long, or a morning or afternoon.  It could be a one time offering to encourage participation in a class or workshop that may be held during the regular session or a one time offering of a new technique to add to current offerings at GAC.  Date and times are flexible.  GAC is looking for those who want to offer the ‘Sampler’.  So if you have a ‘Sampler’ to offer, please contact a member of the Education Committee, Pat Majcher (majr1186@comcast.net), Nancy Dalverny (lednhd2@verizon.net) or Shirleah Kelly (shirleah1@aol.com), or call the Art Center.

CERAMICS STUDIO OFFERING

SODA FIRING Marine Kail has arranged a workshop in conjunction with StokeHole Pottery in Indiana, PA.  Studio time will be provided by GAC at our pottery studio and Soda Firing will take place at StokeHole Pottery. The final firing will be the end of January.  For more information and to sign up, please contact Marine Kail at marine.ruth@hotmail.fr   The workshop will cost $160 and includes 25 lbs of clay and glazes as well at 3 to 4 GAC studio sessions.  There is a limit to the number of people, so sign up early.

ATTENTION FIGURE DRAWING ARTISTS!  Attention Figure Drawing Artists and those who want to give drawing the figure a try!   A small group of us meet monthly to take advantage of the opportunity to sit before a person from our midst who poses for us.  Try asking your friend or spouse to do this and you will see the value of having a willing volunteer as a model!  Never fear!!  We take the opportunity to share tips and strategies with ways each of us has discovered to get a successful drawing on canvas or paper.  This is a no intimidation zone.  We do not always end up with a masterpiece, but we can certainly enjoy accepting the challenge.

This final month of the year is the perfect opportunity to come out to the cozy warmth and camaraderie at Greensburg Art Center and experience this fine artistic opportunity at the center.  Our upcoming session on Thursday, December 21, from 10:00 to 1:00, will present another fresh opportunity and challenge as we draw Dennis Moore, sitting for as a distinguished British gentleman, which he is…wait until you hear is charming accent!

You may incorporate whatever medium and approach you may choose or come just to observe before jumping in to paint or sketch.  Just a reminder that our charge of just $10.00 includes both model and building use fee.

OPEN STUDIOS and Ongoing Classes Open studios do not require formal registration and can be attended once, or however many times you want.  Contact the Center to obtain information from the Open Studio artist such as cost, schedule, etc. Reference the title (below) in bold and the artist if applicable.

At the Greensburg Art Center to celebrate the 100th birthday of
Nina Stahlberg

RSVP Pat Majcher  majr1186@comcast.net or 724-244-6584
By Thursday, November 9

Celebrating Nina Whitfield Stahlberg! Looking back over a lifetime of achievements will be an opportunity for all of us.  Some of us may be privileged to have a life as full as our honored senior artist, Nina Stahlberg.  She has had a reputation as a fine artist and teacher and that is the role that we members of GAC are certainly aware; however, there are many additional aspects and achievements that occurred over her long lifetime.

Nina started painting in oils in the 1960’s at Greensburg Art Center with Mary Shaw Marohnic.  Once she decided to pursue art, she frequented the art shelves at the library to comprehend the terms and procedures of her newfound hobby.  Eventually, Nina offered pastel portraits to others at Greengate Mall.  She soon became president of Greensburg Art Club and made “big changes” in the organization.  She noted that the group was relatively small at that time.

Nina has enjoyed a variety of other accomplishments including being a mother of four sons, surviving widowhood, the loss of one son to leukemia, and being forced to take a job when her husband at age 39 was unable to work because of a heart condition called myocarditis.  She held the distinction of being the first woman officer and later executive branch manager of Dollar Savings Bank in the late 1960’s.  At that time, Nina had the distinction of being the head of the only “all female staff” of any institution of its kind.  The group prided itself on working in “wonderful harmony” which carried over to the many customers they served. She led the pay by phone and direct deposit processes that were both novel at the time.

Her love of art was also in evidence on the walls of the bank: Nina enlisted members of Greensburg Art Club to exhibit one man shows that changed monthly.

This woman stays amazingly active today.

Lesson learned from life: Nina’s observation is that one has the sad times to then appreciate the good times in life.  We can honor her by remembering her wise remarks!

FROM THE ARCHIVES……

This month’s ‘From the Archives’ is from the GAC history;

Today’s world could take a lesson from the members of our center.  In August of 1964, GAC and the Southwest Greensburg Garden Club held a joint show, all part of Greensburg YWCA’s elaborate Friendship Festival, to show solidarity and a commitment to unity of efforts in the arts.  Read the following event details:

The joint show, involving Greensburg Art Club and the Garden Club, culminated in a Friendship Festival in Observance of World Fellowship Day.  Nina Whitfield (Stahlberg) was one of many who represented our club with a painting within the theme of “The Miracle of Flowers”.  Members of GAC could submit entries in any medium.

The extensive activities included an International Bazaar, Arts and Crafts Display, a Flea Market, and Chuck Wagon and Sidewalk Cafe.

Sounds like a huge effort but well worth it!

Look for more “From the Archives” in the November Newsletter!!

CONGRATULATIONS

2023 Mister Fred Rogers Fine Arts Juried Exhibition-Latrobe Art Center

Congratulations to GAC members on the awards they received.  GAC members winners are:  Mary Ellen Raneri, ‘A Quiet Moment’, Mister Fred Rogers Award of Distinction; Awards of Merit to Peg Panasiti for ‘Autumn Sonnet’; Larry Brandstetter for ‘The Table is Set’; Thomas Tholen for ‘Jason’; Barbara Kern-Bush for ‘Faeries’.

Cindy Berceli  was recently honored by receiving a request for her award winning pastel art works to be displayed at the Mansion on Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland.  She was recognized by the curator and was sought out specifically to be part of the show based on her reputation as an accomplished artist on a national scale.   We are proud to have such an accomplished artist and teacher within our art organization.  Here are Cindy’s words to to share her experience with you:

“The Curator of the ‘Animal Kingdom Exhibit’ at the Mansion on Strathmore in Bethesda, MD, emailed to ask if I was still painting animals.  She remembered my Ostrich painting that was in a national juried exhibit held there several years ago and was hoping I would be able to send them a few paintings for this exhibit.  I asked her to view the work on my website and she selected ‘Unkempt Harry, the Alpaca’, The Big-Hearted Giraffe and the ‘Regal Ram’ all pastels, which were delivered.  The exhibit included a variety of media including soft sculpture, a kite artist, 2 artists working in oils, a printmaker, 1 hanging textile and others.  The opening on September 14th was an incredible event, well attended and held in the beautiful mansion built in the 1800’s.  This is a very exciting exhibit which I am grateful to be part of.  Continue entering shows, paint what you love and keep an eye out for emails, they arrive when you least expect them!”

We would like to give recognition to our members for any special award or recognition they receive.   Kindly submit the detailed information in an email to Mary Yeager myeager777@gmail.com or call the Center, one week before the last day of the month.

FROM THE ARCHIVES……
This month’s ‘From the Archives’ is from the GAC history;GAC members participated in the Three Rivers Arts Festival back in 1960.  At that time, presenting artists included Mrs. John Pollins and Mrs. Fred Morgan who each had art on display.  At one point during the festival tornado-like winds ravaged the event and blew over 12 of the pavilions, damaging 50 of the 800 art entries.  Weathermen were later debating if the storm at Point State Park was an actual tornado, but nevertheless felt that it was a “miracle” that so little of the art was actually damaged.During the summers of the 60’s, members held plein aire painting outings at such locations as Faxfield Farms and the Diamond at Ligonier.Look for more “From the Archives” in the October Newsletter!!

In 1952 Viennese-born Henry Koerner  (painter of the Martha Morgan portrait hanging in the GAC classroom) began his art training in Vienna’s Academy of Applied Arts. His parents were victims during Nazi control in Vienna.   Henry came to the United States in1938 and began to work with the Office of War Information in NY and entered the Army in 1942.  He served with the Office of Strategic Services in England and Germany and returned to the US in 1948 and gained fame with five exhibitions in five years.  His 1952 Exhibition opened in New York Midtown Galleries.  When Henry was artist-in-residence in Pittsburgh at the PA College for Woman in that same year, he married a violin student named Joan Frasher who modeled for him.  Currently, two of his paintings are exhibited at the Westmoreland Museum of Am Art.  One is on the left wall in the entrance.Look for more Excerpts in the August Newsletter.UPCOMING MEMBER EXHIBITS

Notice the new outdoor signs on the brick walls of the building? They have been planned for several months and brought to reality by diligent design, research and comparison shopping by Joe Schildkamp. Thanks, Joe!
